Taking Photographs
I won’t use this photo in my magazine as I don’t really like the dull lighting as it dims the photo and makes it look less exiting, and the bricks are slanted in the background which makes the picture look wonky.
I will not be using this photo in my magazine as I don’t like the lighting as it dims the photo, and I also don't like how the bricks are slanted in the background.
I will be using this photo for my magazine front cover as I feel the natural sun light gives the photo the look and aesthetic that matches that of my magazine. I also like the pose and candid look of the model.
I will not be using this photo as i don’t really like the pose that the model is doing in this photo, its quite straight forward and stiff.
I won’t be using this photo for my magazine as I don’t really like how her leg is cut at the side of the photo. And her hand moved as I took the photo so its blurry
I will be using this photo in my magazine for the double page spread as I like the pose in the chair and the lighting will blend in with the background colour of my magazine as I will be removing the wall in the background.
This is me getting the right settings on the camera to take the photos.
I was setting up the portrait mode.

At the early age of 15, Poppy Cowan became an overnight sensation within the Indie genre. She released her first ever song onto sound cloud and gained millions of listens over night. Now, 1 year later, now at 16, she is one of the biggest names in the Indie genre competing with artists and bands such as Arctic Monkeys and Sufjan Stevens . She has released 2 chart topping albums and she’s not slowing down now.
We managed to get an exclusive interview with her to ask the questions that YOU asked us, along with a photoshoot with never seen before photos.
Get to know Poppy!
Poppy Cowan is one of the Biggest names in the Indie genre. She is 16 and made her big break at 15 when she uploaded an original song onto sound cloud and became an over night sensation. Poppy was born on the 22nd of January 2004 in London. She lives with her 2 parents, older sister, and her dog, Juno. Poppy has always had a passion for music and has been singing ever since she could speak. At the start of her music career, she uploaded videos of her singing covers and original songs onto YouTube and gained a following there. As she progressed she started writing more of her own songs and started uploading to sound cloud along side YouTube. When she was 15, she uploaded an original song ‘Petal Fields’ to sound cloud and it gained millions of listens over night, and ever since then, she’s only been getting bigger.
Q&A Questions!
Who was your biggest inspiration?
I have to say, I love so many artists and I've had so many inspirations along the way, but mi biggest inspiration that I've had since the very start would have to be the band ‘Arctic Monkeys’. Ive listened to them since I was young and I’ve always looked up to them. But besides them, id have to say my family. They’ve always been by my side and supported me from the very start of my music career and they still come to all my shows to this day.
How important is music to you?
Well now more than ever music is the most important thing to me. Before I got big, music was still a massive part of my life as I could use it to escape everyday life and problems. At first it was just a hobby I was really passionate about, and every now and then I would post covers and original songs on YouTube and sound cloud for fun. Then all of a sudden I woke up one morning to see one of my original songs got over 5 million listens. Now as I've gotten bigger my fans come up to me with all these stories on how I helped them through their hardest times, so now more than ever, music is the most important thing to me.
What type of music do you most listen to?
I listen to so many different artists and genres, it would be so hard to just pick one. But seeing as I myself am an Indie artist, it would only make sense if I listened to Indie music the most. Theres so many Indie artists to choose from so I couldn’t possibly name a singular one.
What is your creative process?
This is a bit of a difficult one to explain as usually inspirations just hits me at random times. But if I were to explain my more strategic approach it would be to listen to music just alone with no distractions to really get into the zone, after doing this for a little while I will start to have a few different lyric and beat ideas. Id put these ideas onto paper quickly before i forget them, then I’ll sleep on them and see if any extra ideas come to mind because my mind is always most active before I go to sleep. Any ideas I get before going to bed will get written down so I won’t forget them in the morning when I will finally start on the song.
What would you be doing right now if your music career didn’t get big?
Id probably still be in school right now doing my A-Levels. Due to my music blowing up and becoming famous, I’ve not been able to attend school (well at least not mainstream school) but I try to do what I can in-between the things like shows, interviews and song making which isn’t a lot of time.
What is your favourite song to perform on stage?
Probably petal fields as its the first song of mine to really get big and it gets the crowd the most exited which makes me more exited too. I always leave this song till last so everyone gets really hyped up and starts dancing around which ends the show on a really high note so the crowd can remember it.
Setting up Software Template
First I open up photoshop and press ‘File’, ‘New…’ which then pops up this window…
I select the settings ‘International Paper’ then ‘A4’ for my front cover which then gives me this blank document…
Then for my double page spread I repeat a similar process, except I change the A4 size to A3 and make it landscape.
Codes and Conventions
Costume
The outfit my artist is wearing fits in with my Indie genre well. This is because pithing the Indie genre, there are so many different styles and fashion senses that anything could be considered indie. However, oversized and baggy clothing is quite popular at the moment within the genre, so she is wearing an oversized T-shirt and sweatshirt and Mom jeans. Those types of clothing are quite popular within the Indie fan base right now as many popular artists wear this ‘alternative’ style. People who listen to the indie genre would be more likely to buy a magazine if the person on the front is wearing similar clothing to them as they’ll fee they have more in common with them.
Body Copy
My body copy layout is quite unique compared to other Indie magazines. Whilst I still give the basic information and details of my artist, I have the Q&A section, and these questions are sent in by fans themselves. I used this layout because fans will be able to connect with their favourite artists on a deeper level if they see that they answered a question that they themselves asked.
Location
I chose the location for my front cover photoshoot because its not too busy or bold to the reader. The backgrounds seen are all places in my garden. The brick wall will eventually end up getting erased as I don’t want it in the final double page spread. This links to the Indie genre as a lot of the time the artists get photographed in studios so they end up having a flat colour background. but the trees and grass in the background of my front cover image is fitting to artist herself as it reflects her music.
Facial expression and Body language
For my photos, I took pictures of my model in quite canon poses as they don’t look as forced and bold. This makes the artist look more relaxed which links back to her own music as an Indie artist. The artists music is very calming and relaxing so I wanted to make sure that her poses reflected that.
