Purpose of magazine
The purpose of my indie artist magazine, is to expand the indie fanbase and give it a larger audience of people who enjoy the genre. I will do this through spreading exiting news such as information about famous artists, new and up-coming artists and concerts in the North London area, all within the indie genre. I feel there is a lack of specifically indie magazines in the market so I feel by doing this, it will allow more people to discover the indie music - and indie artists, and hopefully find something that they enjoy. I aim to widen the demographic that loves the indie genre from just mainly teenage girls and boys, to perhaps older audiences as well. But over all the main purpose of my Indie magazine is to entertain, inform, educate, promote and advertise.
Form and price of magazine
My magazine would take the form of a physical, print, and also an online magazine. People who read the magazine online would pay a monthly subscription fee (that can be cancelled at any time) by going to our website, and signing up with their credit/debit card details and the online version of the magazine can be viewed from our website. As for the print version, they could either find the new issue in stores, or when they sign up for a subscription on our website they can choose from either the online version or the print version. My magazine will only cost £4 in order for teenagers or any social class to be able to afford it, and if you have a school email, you can get a student discount of 10%. We will also offer subscription discounts; say if you were to buy a single magazine every month without the subscription discounts, it would amount to £48 a year, yet if they were to buy the annual subscription discount it would only amount to £40 a year for all the magazine issues in the year. Another example would be if you were to buy the 6 month subscription discounts would only amount to £20 rather than than £24.
My magazine will be made out of recycled paper so users can put it in the recycling box if they wish to throw it away, however the print magazine will inform the reader that there’s more exclusive content on the online version in order to save paper as young people are often the ones to want to help to the environment.
The Magazine will be made of matte paper in order to fit the aesthetic I am going for, and also to make it recyclable. It will also be light weight so it’s easy to transport. The magazine should have around 130-150 pages which is around the average amount of pages for a music magazine. I feel this amount of pages is not too little but also just enough to keep the reader entertained before the next issue.
Genre of product
My magazine will be focusing in on specifically the Indie music genre. The reason to why I have chosen this genre is because I feel there is a wide variety of styles and Artists within the Indie genre, so I feel this would allow a large audience of people to find an artist that they love. Additionally, I feel there is a gap in the market for Indie magazines and content for people who enjoy the music genre so I aim to fill this gap with my magazine. The only venues in the North London area that host Indie concerts are quite small venues such as night clubs and small theatres as there’s not a huge audience for indie artists, however these small venues are
Content
This magazine would contain interviews, information and articles about famous sand upcoming Indie artists. This would include tour dates, concert ticket prices, news about new music, and general information about the artist along with an exclusive interview where we ask them questions that readers have sent in via our forum (on our website) or our social media platforms.
The reason I chose the Indie genre is because Indie is independently released music which means there are multiple genres within the genre, meaning that anyone can find an artist they enjoy based on their music taste. I intend for this magazine to allow people to explore the Indie genre and find music and artists that they feel match their taste, and so continue to read our magazines in hopes of finding more and more artists which they love.
My magazine will also include links to our website/social media pages where we will be hosting give aways for concert and meet and greet tickets to see our featured artist for that month to engage our readers more.
To help pay for the costs of the magazine, we will include relevant product and services advertisements such as clothing and apps that our readers may find interest in so then they actually contribute to the sales of the magazine.
Target audience
My primary target audience will be boys and girls around the ages of 13-19 from any racial/ethnic group and of any social class. I feel this is the right age as people start to become more independent around this age and start developing different tastes, and I feel the wide variety of artists in the Indie genre can help them establish their taste for music hopefully within the Indie genre that my magazine will celebrate.
My secondary target audience will be siblings of the primary audience who may not be old enough to really establish a music taste, or attend concerts. They can read and listen to the music with their siblings so when they're old enough that can explore the genre for themselves. Additionally, people who are a bit older than the primary target audience (around 20-25) I feel will be able to find pleasure from this magazine as they are still quite young and within the demographic that listens to Indie music.
Lastly the tertiary target audience is anyone else that feels they want to explore more of the Indie music genre, or just anyone else who decides to read that months issue of our magazine, regardless if they enjoy the Indie genre or just want to find out more about the featured artist.
Resources and Personnel
The Resources I should require in order to make the magazine would include:
A camera - To do the photoshoots of the featured artist and to take pictures of anything else needed (i.e. Venues). This is to keep the magazine visual and to catch the eye of readers, as well as showing you who the featured artist of the month is.
Camera Equipment - This would include Tripods, different types of lenses in order to get a desired look, style, and shot type
Photoshoot equipment - This would include equipment such as lighting, a backdrop if the photoshoot is not done in other surroundings such as outside or interesting venues (i.e. restaurant, arcade etc), and any other required (relevant) props. This would to be to make the photos taken look a lot more professional and also makes the photos look a lot more interesting.
A computer - This is needed in order to edit photos (in which I will require editing software such as photoshop)
All the equipment above will be required in order to make the Indie artist based magazine.
The Personnel needed in order to create the magazine would involve:
A camera man/operator and lighting operator to take photos and set up sets. A model (artist) to take pictures of for the front page and double spread. A hair and makeup team for the model along with a costume designer for outfits. Along with a supervisor for health and safety An editor (or editing team) and a designer for the layout and design of the front cover and double page spread of the magazine. An interviewer and journalist for the contents of the magazine. A copyrighter to take care of copyright and plagiarism issues. And a publisher to publish the magazine once it's finished.
Distribution and marketing methods
Social media very popular among my target audience so it would be beneficial to market my magazine through social media to get the attention of as many people in my target audience as possible. Teenagers tend to use social media on a daily basis so by placing adverts on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook would be sure to reach and inform teenagers about or magazine. The brief implicitly tells me to display the ‘Vibrant’ music scene in the North London area, so targeting the teenagers on social media would be sure to attract just as ‘Vibrant’ readers as if you’re on social media you’re most likely keeping up with all the newest trends. This marketing technique will also reach even the secondary and tertiary target audience as most people now-a-days are signed up with social media and check it more or less every day. This marketing technique shouldn’t cost a lot seeing as social media is free (unless you’re paying to promote your posts) yet we will need a social media director to manage the page and our post promotions.
An additional marketing technique which can be used is billboards. Regardless if you can or can’t drive, at some point or another you will be in either a car or bus and pass multiple billboards, so then again this marketing technique won’t only just reach our target audience (especially 17-19 year olds who are able to drive and are perhaps already listening to Indie music as they drive) but the secondary and tertiary target audience as well. This would be sure to bring in the right kind of audience to the ‘Vibrant’ music scene. However, this marketing technique is fairly expensive so we will only start using this method once the magazine has brought in a fairly large income.
As for distribution, my print magazine will be sold in newsagents and shops throughout North London. New agents and stores would be a good location for my magazine as these places tend to be visited by people within my target audience after school or on weekends whilst they’re out, or with their parents whilst doing shopping. The location of magazines in a store is usually by where all the snacks/sweets are so its conveniently placed to catch the target audiences eye.
The magazine will be priced at £4 (same price for print version and online) however the print magazine will inform the reader that there’s more exclusive content on the online version in order to save paper as young people are often the ones to want to help to environment.

Font styles
For my double page spread I will be using he ‘Arial’ font for the main body text of my magazine. I chose this font because its not too complicated/detailed and easy to read. It also gives the magazine quite a modern and ‘non-tacky’ sort of vibe. I don't want my magazine to be too serious but I feel the ‘Ariel’ font gives it the right balance between trendy/modern and sophisticated.
For the mast head I was thinking of using a more unique and ‘Quirky’ font to symbolise the ‘individual’ aspect of the Indie genre. Here are some font ideas for the masthead (Indigo) of my magazine:
- ‘Baby blocks’ Font
- ‘Minecraft’ Font
- ‘Indie rock’ Font
I chose the title ‘Indigo’ as it sounds like ‘Indie’ and the colour indigo conveniently matches the sort of retro colour schemes i want to use.
Final Idea
The font I have decided on is ‘Indie Rock’. The reason as to why Ive chosen this not in because the font itself is quite Indie and unique so it fits in with my genre. It's also means that it doesn’t look as simple as the rest of the fonts on the front cover.
The colour of my title will be Indigo as it relates to the title and I feel like if if was a unique (Indie) colour it would be more recognisable and ‘Iconic’.
Sketched Layouts
The title seen here is only a hand drawn one but it will be replaced with the typed version as this is just a rough draw to display the composition
The model is dressed up with clothes that fit into the retro colour scheme I planned.
The Puff displayed shows a giveaway chance to win free meet and greet tickets and tells the reader which page to go too.
Bar code in bottom right hand corner.
Cover-lines on the front explains what you can expect to see inside.
These show the top headlines inside the magazine to give them an idea what they can expect to find out inside
I made sure to try and include the important features of a magazine cover. such as the Headline, Puff, Barcode, cover-lines, price and the model
Double page spread
Title of the artist is quite big and in a different colour to everything else to draw attention to it.
We will provide basic information of the artist at the top (Stuff like name, age, and music history
We will pick out 6 questions from the forum to have the artist answer
Mood Board
This mood board will be a great influence to this magazine as it displays Indie magazine covers, Indie artists, Indie album covers and my ideal colour schemes. This will keep me on track as i'll be able to refer to this for inspiration and ideas. The magazine and album covers will be able to point me in the right direction aesthetic and composition wise.
Article Ideas
My articles would have to relate to the North London area if about concerts or up-coming artists.
For each issue we will interview a featured artist (usually a well known/famous indie artist) and ask them questions that readers have asked in forums. I understand the issue that we may not be able to interview well known artists for our magazine until we are better known, so for the first few issues we will be interviewing more up coming artists rather than more popular/well known artists using questions we chose ourselves until our forum catches on (Q&A).
Once our magazine becomes bigger and more well known, we will be able to get the attention of bigger artists and get hold of them to interview and photograph. Once this happens we will be able to ask questions that readers have requested in the forums on our website. Readers can be informed about how to access our forum at the end of our magazine. For people who buy print versions, we will provide them with the link to our website, and how to navigate to the forum section. However if they use the online version there will be a direct URL link which takes them straight to the page.
In our magazine we will include the top charts for the Indie music genre. This top charts article will include the top 50 Indie songs for that month, what album they’re from, the artist and a little short description of the artist. This will give readers the opportunities to see what music is popular for the month and discover new artists.
We could also include a ‘Review’ article where fans can review and rate their favourite artists new releases and concerts. We will collect this information through our forum where we will pick out a few of the most mentioned artists and find the average rating and display them for other people and fans to see. This could be helpful as someone who hasn’t been to an artists concert before can look at the reviews and see what they can expect when they go. The forum also gives people a chance to connect over their thoughts about their favourite artists.
The magazine will also include the Competition/Give away page which is mentioned on the puff on the front page of the magazine. This page will include information on how to enter the draw for the free meet and greet/concert tickets for the featured artist of that month.
We can also include a tip page where popular and upcoming artists gives tips about how to get big in the music industry and what the upcoming artists are doing to get themselves known. This will be enjoyed by people with a passion in music and they want to pursue a career in it.
Competition
My magazine primarily focuses on specifically the Indie music scene in North London, so if people don’t enjoy that genre, they won’t buy the magazine. Because of this, people may choose to buy the bigger more popular music magazines such as Rolling Stones, Q, Smash Hits and Melody Maker as they are more well known and sold all over the county and also in many different countries. This can be a big threat and huge competition as my magazine is only based in North London so people who live outside of North London won’t buy it as its not relevant to them, meanwhile the other popular magazines are more widely based, so more people would buy it as it applies to them as well. Rolling Stone issues cost £9.99, Q issues price at £4.90, meanwhile my magazine is only issued at £4 making it the most affordable because it’s targeted towards teenagers who typically won’t have as much money as adults. And because its cheaper, it proves a direct threat to the other magazines, as my magazine is the most affordable meaning more teenagers would buy my magazine instead of theirs.
